EXPLAIN THIS

A few things clients ask all the time.

What's the difference between “accepted” and “approved”?

What is an IP PIN?

What does a tax extension do?

A six-digit number assigned by the IRS that protects your Social Security number from unauthorized filing.

Accepted generally means the return passed the IRS's initial electronic checks and was received for processing. It does not mean the refund has been approved or issued.

An extension grants extra time to file paperwork until October, but does not extend the deadline to pay tax owed.

My friend got back $____. Why didn't I?

Every tax return is different. Your refund is based on your own income, withholding, credits, deductions and household situation — not what someone else received.

Can I file my taxes using my final check stub?

A final pay stub isn't the same as a W-2 and may not include year-end adjustments.

How long will it take to get my refund?

The IRS issues most refunds within 21 days for electronically filed returns, although some returns require additional processing. State refund times vary by state.

Can you amend a return someone else prepared?

No. Most clients can complete the entire process remotely using our secure mobile app to submit information and upload documents.

Do I need to come into the office?

Yes, depending on the situation. I'll need a copy of the originally filed return along with the documents related to the correction.

Can I file if I'm missing a W-2 or 1099?

Don't guess at the numbers or leave known income off your return. If a tax document is missing, contact the employer or payer first. If you still can't obtain it, there may be other ways to obtain the information needed to file correctly.

Can you prepare a return from a previous year?

Yes. Prior-year and unfiled returns can be prepared. The documents needed will depend on the tax year and your individual situation.

How long does tax preparation take?

Preparation time depends on the complexity of the return, whether all required documents were submitted and the volume of returns currently being processed. Missing information can delay completion.

Yes. We will discuss your completed return in detail prior to filing. During this time, I confirm correct spelling of taxpayers name, address, dependent(s), tax docs received and any possible deductions and/or credits pertinent to your return.

Can you tell me how much my refund will be before preparing my return?

No accurate refund amount can be determined until your tax information has been entered and the return has been prepared. Your refund or balance due depends on your individual tax situation.

Will I get to review my return before it's filed?

How can I check my federal refund?

Use the IRS Where's My Refund? tool. Have the following info handy: Social Security Number, Tax Year, Filing Status and Refund Amount.

What if I receive an IRS or state letter after filing?

Don't ignore it. Read the notice carefully and keep the entire letter. Depending on the issue, additional services may be needed to review the notice and determine your next step.

Does my tax preparation fee include IRS representation or responding to future notices?

NO. Tax preparation and tax-resolution/notice services are separate fees, not unless the notice is due to the error of CityScape Tax Georgia.

Ask the question.

STILL NOT SURE? You don’t have to know the tax language before asking for help.
